On Your Side

Next week my hubby and I will celebrate our “date-a-versary”. That’s what we call the anniversary of our first date. On August 19th, it will be 28 years. How can I be that old?!?

What a blessing it is for me to go from high school years, to college years, and then to be able to build a family with one man by my side. Aside from my relationship with the Lord, my relationship with my hubby is one of the things I am most proud of. I ain’t gonna lie- marriage is hard– but it is worth it! We disagree, we argue at times, but we have both learned that above all else, at the end of the day we love and CHOOSE to love each other unconditionally.

I had something funny happen last night. I got up in the middle of the night to use the bathroom (like I always do), and when I got back in bed, I felt his arm SMACK me across the top of my head. He had simply turned over and threw his arm out in his sleep.

“Ummm…. that is MY SIDE of the bed!” I said to him in an annoyed manner. I then pretended to karate-chop his arm with my hand at the end of “his side” and the beginning of “mine”.

And then he said the sweetest thing in his sleep-

“I’m always on your side”.

Sigh.

Isn’t that was love is all about?

Right Here Waiting For Food

My husband and I were inspired to write a song parody about our dogs and their love affair for food.  From the moment I wake up they are following me around, waiting for their next meal.  I think if you have a fur baby, you can relate 😉 Hope you enjoy!

“Right Here Waiting For Food”

Doorways apart night after night
And I slowly starve to death
You open the door and let me in
I greet you with my morning breath

If you don’t feed me Mama
There will be lots of drama

Wherever you go
Whatever you do
I will be right here waiting for food
Whatever you eat
What falls at your feet
I will be right here waiting for food

I took for granted all the times
That my bowl was filled to the brim
But now it’s empty and I know
That I’ll never eat again

Oh can’t you see my hunger
I’m not getting any younger

Wherever you go
Whatever you do
I will be right here waiting for food
Whatever you eat
What falls at your feet
I will be right here waiting for food

I don’t know how I can survive
This ordeal
But I’m gonna bark at you ’till I
get my next meal

Wherever you go
Whatever you do
I will be right here waiting for food
Whatever you eat
What falls at your feet
I will be right here waiting for food

*and my apologies to Richard Marx for ruining his song, because I’ll never ever hear it the same way again, lol!!

We had the most aMAZing week earlier this summer! The girls and I took a trip with our friends to Florida.  We went to Universal Studios Theme Park and it was absolutely fabulous!

If you know anything about my girls, you know that they are huge Harry Potter fanatics. So to say that their dreams came true is a slight understatement.  Harry Potter World at Universal did not disappoint- and even I was amazed!

But what I didn’t expect was how much fun we had in the Dr Seuss park! The lines were incredibly short and even I found my inner child as we rode the whimsical rides and listened to the wild rhymes of Dr Seuss.

One night we were so tired that we couldn’t stop giggling.  You know how when you get overly tired how everything seems funny?  Well all of us girls were snuggled into the hotel beds, and I came up with that poem and I laughed so hard that I couldn’t even get it out.  I was trying to be serious, trying to get them to settle down and go to sleep, but even I couldn’t stop myself from laughing!

I am so thankful for that special week with my girls, and also for the reminder that you’re never too old to be a kid!fullsizeoutput_21f0

a home-cooked meal

IMG_4676

Cooking is something I have never really enjoyed, but eating– that’s a whole different ball game! I love food! And I have gotten much better at meal planning and cooking lately.  But these summer days seem to be even busier for me than the school year.

After running around all day, my youngest daughter asked me what we were going to have for dinner-

“Come here”, I told her.  “I have something really important to tell you…”

Actually, I was in the middle of practicing one of the saddest songs I have ever heard, trying to learn it to sing at an upcoming funeral- and I was choking back tears as she called to me from the other room.

I wanted to have this super sappy conversation with her.  I wanted to hug her tight and tell her how much I loved her and that I didn’t ever want her to get big and leave home- but I didn’t.

“I have been meaning to tell you this,” I said in my most serious voice.   “Dinner is cancelled.  We won’t be having dinner tonight.” I said with a deadpan expression on my face.

“Mom!” she smiled at me and rolled her eyes.

“I think I’m going to make quesadillas… or maybe spaghetti?”  Dinner of champions! Those are my easy go-to meals when I don’t wanna think about meal prep.

“But Mom- you NEVER make us a home-cooked meal anymore! Never!  All I want is to order pizza!  Please?  Pretty please?!”

I burst out laughing.

Because ordering pizza is definitely not a home-cooked meal!

But that night pizza seemed perfect.

And in that moment I realized how incredibly blessed I am.

I have two awesome daughters- who definitely do NOT expect perfectly home-cooked meals from me,

a hubby who loves me just as I am- and was equally in favor of pizza,

and a God who loves me infinitely more than I could ever comprehend.

things aren’t always what they seem…

Like lots of middle-aged folks, I have a hard time going to sleep at night.  Now that summer is in full swing, our normal “school year” routine has flown out the window.  I have never been one to stay up late, and no matter what time I go to bed- my eyes pop open at the crack of dawn.  My hubby has always been a night owl, and our two girls have inherited this trait from him- much to my dismay!

So needless to say, it’s hard going to sleep early while the rest of the house is still awake. I have been keeping myself up ’til everyone is settled, but I still wake up around 5 am or so every morning. Imagine my surprise when I found this in Target the other day-

IMG_2342

ahhh….. deep sleep at last!!!!

Really?  I can get my vitamins and a special sleep potion all in one fizzy drink??  SOLD!!

I was hopeful- really hopeful, that I was going to sleep like a baby that first night. So around 9pm, I poured my glass of water and emptied one of the powdered packets into the glass.  I smelled the berry flavor as I stirred and then chugged it down.  It was actually really refreshing.  And the powder dissolved completely- another strange pet peeve I have (having powdered residue in my drinks really bothers me!)

I fell asleep really fast that night.  So fast that I didn’t even remember my head hitting the pillow.  But much to my dismay- I was awake by 1am! I was super annoyed.  This was supposed to be my sleepless cure!  I got up to use the restroom and then quickly went back to sleep.

Until I was up at 3am…you guessed it- to use the bathroom.  Again.  In fact, I used this Emergen-zzzz several nights before I realized it was actually causing me to wake up multiple times a night to use the restroom.

So whose bright idea was it to make a sleep aid that actually causes you to wake up to pee several times a night?!

I’ve laughed for days about this because I have one of the smallest bladders known to man, and also because it never crossed my mind that it might actually cause me to wake up!

I’d say a better name for this product would be Emergen-p!

The After-Christmas

IMG_0406

Our new additions to the tree… new ornaments are always a favorite!!

Maybe I’ll keep on Christmas-ing

do you think anyone would know?

If the lights keep shining on the inside

will my outsides be aglow?

while everyone de-decorates

I feel a bit of gloom

cause deep down in my heart

for CHRISTmas- there’s still room…

One of my FAVORITE parts of Christmas is the “after- Christmas” that happens when we visit all our extended family, reminding me that Christmas is not reserved for one day, it is Christmas anywhere and everywhere He is with us!

IMG_0487

Being silly together is always my favorite!!

And one of my very favorite gifts I receive every year is not one that’s wrapped.  It’s spending time with my family…

IMG_0481

what photo is complete without bunny ears?!

IMG_0479

And my Christmas is not complete without a “selfie” with my mom and sister…

IMG_0517

Me, Mom and my Sissy

So we sat together.  And each of us struck up our best pose…

IMG_0516

and with every snap… NO!  Not that one! lol… I have never been photogenic.

For fun, my hubby took a picture of my sister’s husband taking a picture of me taking a selfie of all of us.

And a picture just doesn’t capture the depth of the silliness of the moment.  The joy of laughing with my mom and sister- those are moments I always treasure 🙂

My lovely momma 🙂

So even though we put away our tree and all the trimmings today, it’s still Christmas for me. I’m keeping my nativity set on my piano, and I’ll keep on playing those favorite Christmas songs for a little while longer…

Away in a Manger

IMG_3139

It is bittersweet watching the girls grow and “outgrow” certain things…

One of their very favorite Christmas decorations has always been the Little People nativity set.  I used to set it out and they would play with it for hours!  They would even incorporate their own toys into the manger scene.  One day I even found Homer Simpson on top of the manger!

I noticed yesterday that they hadn’t even taken the nativity set out of the box yet.  Sigh…

I seized the opportunity yesterday and took the nativity out myself!  I set it up on the floor under our tree- something I would have NEVER done- for fear that one of the pieces would get lost or would end up in a toy box somewhere.

As I sat enjoying my cup of coffee this morning, I watched my dog lying under the tree. It has become his favorite spot- resting on the tree skirt under the warmth of the white lights from our tree.  Little did I know, he was waiting to make his move…

“No!”

I raised my voice at him as I watched him lunge forward and grab the baby Jesus from the nativity.

I laughed as he dropped it from his mouth.  Leave it to my beloved dog to bring a whole new meaning to “Taste and see that the Lord is good”- Psalm 34:8

Back in my day…

back in my day

“Back in MY day…”

Yesterday I had the joy of sharing one of those “back in my day” stories with my daughters…

While I was looking through some pictures from a trip my husband and I took to Paris-B.C. (before children), I found something from my childhood that I have been looking for for years!

When I was about 10 years old, I wanted a tape recorder for Christmas.  I remember the day I got that red tape recorder and a set of blue “k-mart special” blank tapes, and it was the best present ever!  My sister and I spent countless hours recording ourselves singing and recording songs off of the radio.

Imagine my delight when I found one of those k-mart tapes last night in the box with my old pictures! It was like Christmas all over again!  I patiently waited until the next morning to play it in my mini-van… (yes, we have probably one of the last mini-vans to have a cassette player in it!)

best.gift.ever!!!!!!

I carefully slid the tape into the tape deck, not even sure if it would still play- but sure enough, I heard the crackly sound of the tape loud and clear.  It was like going back in time 28 years… I heard snippets of songs we recorded from the radio while we played in the background… then my sister and I sang our little hearts out.  We sang “The Greatest Love of All” in perfect unison, a cappella- and the sound was eerily familiar.  It could have easily been my own two girls belting out that tune.  My sister and I sounded just like my girls!

When my girls got into the van with me, I had to explain what we were listening to.

“Back in my day, we didn’t have cell phones with video recorders… or cd’s or youtube or iPods… We had to make “mix tapes”.  We had to actually *gasp*  wait for our favorite song to come on the radio and then time it just right to record it on our cassette tape.  Then we had to be really, really quiet so that we couldn’t hear ourselves on the tape.”

They looked at me like I was an alien. They were not impressed.

We continued to listen to the tape, and I had to stifle my laughter as I heard my sister and I telling each other “Shhh!!!”.  And then we couldn’t help ourselves… as soon as the chorus to a song we were trying to record came on, we belted it out.  The funny part was that we never, ever knew the words to the verses- we just made them up.

And while I was deep in nostalgic thought, listening to my childhood mix-tape, my own girls were bickering and belting out their own favorite tunes in the back of our mini van…

plus ça change, plus c’est la même chose!

Flowers- the last item on our shopping list!

In search of the perfect shrug to compliment our Easter Sunday outfits, the girls and I headed out to the mall yesterday. Shopping with my daughters is always an adventure- one that I often have to give myself a “pep talk” to do. Gotta have a planned route, set clear expectations, and we buy absolutely NOTHING that is not on our list…okay, I mean the imaginary list that is in my brain because even if I did write one, it would be lost within seconds of finishing it…

Anyway, we arrived at our first destination, and much to my delight, the return I had to make first went off without a hitch!  I quickly found the perfect shrug for myself and made the purchase.  It was almost too good to be true- no lines, no hassle, girls were as good as gold…. and then we proceeded to exit the store.

As soon as I passed by the tag sensors, the alarm went off.  Boy is that thing loud!  I think it’s even louder when you are the one setting it off.  My face turned beet red, and the girls were mortified. I stepped back, and at that same time an elderly lady was walking towards the sensors with her bag in hand.  We stepped through at the same time, and sure enough- it went off again.  The elderly lady shot me a disapproving look, and I quickly went back to the check-out counter and they checked my bag.  Nope- no sensor tag. I tried to exit the store a third time, and once again, the alarm went off.  The sales associate waived me on, and the girls and I journeyed onto store #2.

They walked far enough behind me that I could tell they didn’t want the horror of being stared at if we set off another store alarm.  I approached the sensor of the next store, and turned to smile at my girls. Surely it wouldn’t go off again!

Much to my horror, it did- this one seemed even louder.  I noticed people were staring at me and my face started getting red again.  I walked through the entryway and someone asked me if they could help me.  I said I needed to find a shrug for my girls to wear, and oh, by the way– I keep setting these darned sensors off!  She was baffled, too, and said not to worry about it.  Another sales associate approached me and asked me if I was wearing Ann Taylor Loft jeans.  What a strange question…why yes, I was wearing Loft jeans…

“Sometimes there is a sensor in the jeans that set off our alarm system.”

“Well, that’s crazy!  I’ve had these jeans for ever and they have never set off any alarms!”

“How about you follow me- I can deactivate it for you.”

“You mean deactivate my butt?” I asked her, trying to stifle my giggles.  The girls were completely mortified at this entire situation.  I followed her to the register and began feeling up and down the seams of my jeans.  She waved her magic wand up and down my sides and backside, with no luck.  So, I did the only thing I could think to do- I reached down into my pant legs and much to my relief- I found the culprit.  I turned my jeans down and she cut the tag out with her scissors.

There were way too many people staring at my backside at this point, and all I could do was laugh. Even the girls were hysterically giggling and hiding behind clothing racks.

So the next time you set an alarm off in a store- be sure to check your backside… you might just need your butt deactivated!

Pi Day

How could I ever deny

a day that’s devoted to pi?

I partake without care

blissfully unaware

that it finds a new home on my thigh!

My oldest daughter celebrated “pi” day at school yesterday. She asked me to come for a special activity her class was doing to celebrate- including eating pie, of course!  Anytime my 12 year old asks me to be a part of her day- I am there with bells on!  Due to the busy-ness of our week, I had not purchased any pies ahead of time. I decided to go to the store first thing in the morning, and much to my surprise- there were no pre-baked pies.  I guess people really do plan ahead, lol!  The entire bakery shelf was bare. I am thankful I minded His “nudge” to get out early to buy the frozen ones that I had to bake.

On a side note- my daughter added before she left to get on the bus-

“Momma- don’t forget to wear your “skinny jeans!”

False advertising at it’s finest!

I smiled…just maybe one day those jeans will do what they say!
